What can I do to make a difference in my community in honor of my Bar/Bat Mitzvah?

There are many opportunities to make a difference in your community, especially around the time of your Bar/Bat Mitzvah. We are happy to help you facilitate the important choice to be active in your community. The B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy program gives you the unique gift of the ability to allocate funds to non-profit organizations to help others. The B’nai Tzedek program also allows you to give your time to volunteer at agencies across Toronto that need your help.

How can I join the B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy Program?

There are many ways in which you can get involved with the B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy program. At the time of your Bar/Bat Mitzvah, there are several ways to give back to your community. You have the option of asking your guests to contribute to your fund in lieu of gifts, or you can set up a fund after your Bar/Bat Mitzvah with a minimum donation of $1000. You can also contribute to a one time project locally, or in Israel, shaping the lives of those in need.

What is the B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy program’s mission and vision?

Our mission is to give teens the power to make a difference through Tzedakah, deepen their commitment to social action, and educate teens about local and international non-profit Jewish organizations. Our vision is to engage Jewish teens in a lifelong relationship with Tzedakah and Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) and help cultivate future leaders within the Jewish community.

What kind of projects can I contribute to with my Bar/Bat Mitzvah money?

There is a wide range of projects that you can contribute to. Depending on your interests, there are always opportunities to help others: camp scholarships, computers, sports, dance lessons, educational opportunities, and so much more. For more information about projects that you can help, see our projects that need funding page.

Who am I helping by starting a fund?

That will depend upon you and your interests, as you are able to help a cause that is significant to you. For example, current and past participants have funded scholarships to send youth to camp, built dance studios and sports facilities, contributed funds to medical research, enabled youth to experience therapeutic horseback riding programs, and so much more.

How does the B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy program work?

The B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy Program gives teens the opportunity to set up an endowment fund in his or her own name. The money from the teen’s fund is invested with the other assets from the foundation, and each year the participants have the opportunity to allocate a portion of the interest earned from their fund to an organization (or organizations) of their choice. Participants can also choose to participate in a one time larger project that is of interest to them in addition to creating a fund.

Is this program only offered in Toronto?

No! Toronto is one of many communities across North America offering the B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy Program. Jewish communities everywhere have started to focus on youth involvement and leadership. The B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy movement is an important tool in creating the philanthropists of both today and tomorrow.

What programs are run throughout the year for B’nai Tzedek members?

As a member of B’nai Tzedek, the teens will be invited to an annual social action day where they volunteer at one out of a selection of a few organizations in the community. Participants are also invited to another program during the year that relates to the common interest amongst the teens of philanthropy, helping others, and bringing change to the world. Members of B’nai Tzedek are also invited to various volunteer opportunities throughout the year including the UJA telethon.

Does this program introduce me to volunteer opportunities?

Yes! The B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy program not only encourages donations, but also educates on volunteer opportunities across Toronto, Israel, and the rest of the world. Not only do participants volunteer and connect with organizations through our programming, but participants are also notified of different volunteer opportunities within our community throughout the year. Our programs allot time for learning about the organizations we are volunteering for and the impact they have on the community. For more information about organizations that need you to volunteer your time, see our volunteer opportunities page.
